BY DEGREES - FROM CARE TO UNIVERSITY

In December 2004, the Trust completed a five-year commissioned action research project exploring the experiences of the small number of care leavers who go to university. The research, which was fully funded by grant making trusts and Government sources, was undertaken at the Thomas Coram Research Unit of the Institute of Education, University of London, and overseen by an Advisory Group chaired by Sir William Utting.
The project aims to influence Government, local authorities, universities and schools to recognise the potential of children in care and provide the support they need to achieve it.
A total of 50 care leavers a year entering higher education over three years took part in the research. To celebrate their achievements, they were invited to a reception in the House of Lords, hosted by Lord Laming of Tewin, in July 2004.
The research findings were published in the Final Report, “Going to university from care” which was launched at a Conference in May 2005 at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre in London.
A six-month Dissemination Programme, running from January to June 2005, was fully funded by the KPMG Foundation, and the Trust is continuing dissemination on an ongoing basis to ensure that the findings of the research will have maximum impact.
